How can we integrate IoT technology into Avery Dennison’s secure supply chain to enhance efficiency, transparency, and predictability?

Avery Dennison, a materials manufacturer serving top clothing brands like Nike, Adidas, and more, approached us with a visionary goal: to integrate Internet of Things (IoT) technology into their highly protected supply chain. Our mission was to design a series of prototypes that would not only transform their supply chain but also provide clarity and transparency to the Avery Dennison team.

Challenge

Avery Dennison’s supply chain is known for its exceptional security and efficiency. However, to stay at the forefront of innovation, they sought to explore the possibilities offered by IoT. The challenges were to create prototypes that seamlessly integrated IoT technology and to document the supply chain intricacies comprehensively. The tasks included:

  • Schedule Optimizer Prototype: Our journey began with the development of a Schedule Optimizer prototype. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), we designed a system that could build printing schedules optimized for necessary shipments. This prototype streamlined scheduling processes, enhancing efficiency and reducing lead times.
  • PO Lead Time Tracker Prototype: The second prototype introduced a PO (Purchase Order) Lead Time Tracker, tracking the steps of the supply chain. By harnessing RFID and NFC technology, we enabled transparency and optimization for the supply chain management team. This prototype allowed for tracking each PO specifically, understanding timeframes, delays, and potential issues.
  • Supplies Management Prototype: The third prototype focused on supplies management, monitoring the usage of materials on the factory floor. Factory leads and printer operators could manage supplies efficiently. IoT-enabled printers tracked quantities and predicted when more supplies were needed. Additionally, factories could subscribe to and manage their supply subscriptions through the platform.
  • Online Remote Support Platform: The fourth prototype was a comprehensive online remote support platform. This prototype underwent extensive development and analysis, catering to the unique challenges of managing support across different time zones. We conducted interviews with key stakeholders to understand their processes for handling printer issues and completing tickets, ensuring that the platform met their specific needs.

Outcome

Our collaboration with Avery Dennison has resulted in a groundbreaking transformation of their supply chain management. The prototypes we developed have introduced IoT technology into critical aspects of their operations, enhancing efficiency, transparency, and predictability.

Avery Dennison’s supply chain is ready to integrate AI-driven scheduling, precise tracking of lead times, streamlined supplies management, and a robust online remote support platform. These innovations have positioned Avery Dennison as a pioneer in adopting IoT technology in the materials manufacturing industry.

This project exemplifies the successful fusion of innovation, technology, and meticulous UX design. Together, we have redefined supply chain management, enabling Avery Dennison to better serve their top-tier clients while maintaining the security and efficiency they are known for.
